ATLANTIC AREA

What is the INTERREG Atlantic Area programme?

Territorial cooperation has been an opportunity for the less dynamic European regions to establish connections with more dynamic, innovative and successful ones. In addition, it has also contributed to create exchange networks and cultural, social and economic bonds between the most developed regions and other territories.

Within the framework of the regional politics of the European Union, INTERREG Atlantic Area is a European funding programme which supports transnational cooperation projects, contributing to the economic, social and territorial cohesion of 37 Atlantic regions.

The key characteristics of this area are its environmental heritage and its maritime dimension, apart from sharing a common standard of urban and territorial development, based on a majority of intermediary rural areas and a limited number of large metropolitan areas.

Among other common points of the Atlantic Area, the tradition of cooperation, the strong networks existing between the main actors and the important heritage and cultural identity are basic factors for its joint development.

The INTERREG Atlantic Area programme is aimed at achieving significant and measurable advances for a cohesive, sustainable and well-balanced development of the Atlantic regions and their maritime heritage, by promoting solutions to respond to the challenges of the actors involved in the areas of innovation and competitiveness, resources, environment and cultural assets, contributing to the reduction of the existing regional disparities.
